A happy crowd of Nature Volunteers met on the 9th of October 2025 to plant insect friendly plants and seeds. Chris Walker, the newly appointed biodiversity officer at Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, brought his knowledge and experience to the planting and it was a very productive and satisfying morning.

This was the second time we had worked in The Howdale this year, we had sown wildflower seeds at the end of April. Sadly, intense heat and drought through this year resulted in many of our seeds not germinating or thriving. There is no way of watering at The Howdale but in the last two years this has not been a problem and the wild flowers have been a joy to behold. Not this year.

As a response to this we decided to change our plans and plant perennial plants such as lavender and rosemary in addition to a selections of native perennials and annual wildflowers. We also planted in autumn to give the plants a chance to bed in before next year.

But it is evident that lack of rain and severe heat are piling stress on our wild plants and it is indicative of the breakdown of our climate. We are all part of the natural world, without it there is no us. We love the beautiful web of life in all its glorious variety that is why the NVN does what it can to protect and nurture the resilience of nature.

Thank you to everyone who turned up with your spades and trowels and got busy to nurture nature, till the next time!
